Master Retreat is Serene and Elegant — Part II

This master suite’s bathroom glows with confident femininity and elegance.

An Elegant Master Bathroom

Closeup of Caesarstone Quartz Surface in Lace PatternAs I shared in Part I of the Master Retreat story, Jo Ann Hartley and Jennifer Hershon started this master bath design with an innovative material. The designers chose Caesarstone’s new Motivo in the ‘Lace’ pattern (detail right) for the shower surround and vanity tops.

“This quartz product (sold in slab form) is etched to look like a damask pattern,” said Hartley.

It’s not a piece-of-cake installation. “It’s quite a challenge to match the design so that the shower walls appear seamless.”

This room is a tutorial on how to successfully blend patterns in a small space. The designers chose materials that reflected the curves of the damask in the quartz, but in subtle, neutral tones.

“We fell in love with David Goldberg’s handmade wallpaper, from William Switzer… A strong curvilinear shape is found in the decorative lighting fixtures, the freestanding tub, vanity legs and hand painted window treatments,” said Hartley.

I was amazed that the light fixtures weren’t custom designed; they complement the wallcovering so well.

Other touches of glamour include the cut crystal plumbing fixtures and the etched glass for the makeup vanity top. Anyone would feel more relaxed and beautiful in this space.

The designers considered the environmental footprint when making choices. “As certified green building professionals we had the opportunity to source many green products and show that they are polished and beautifully crafted and work well in all types of interiors,” said Hartley.

I asked Hartley what she and Hershon enjoyed most about their Master Suite project at the Marin Designers Showcase.

“It’s always a delight to design what WE like and then have the homeowner appreciate our design concept and approve everything at the first meeting,” exclaimed Hartley. (That must be a nice experience.)

“We strive to use unusual materials and love working with our local artists, craftspeople and vendors…plus the General Contractor (I.R.Hadley) was a dream to work with.”

Designers Jennifer Hershon and Jo Ann Hartley specialize in high-end residential and commercial projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Lake Tahoe Basin, and can be reached through their boutique interior design firm, Hershon Hartley Design, Inc.
