Words as Art

I hope you are all spending some quality time relaxing and enjoying your loved ones on this Thanksgiving Day. Here’s a creative activity you might try — a little fun with words!

Kathy Thanksgiving Wordle

In celebration of Thanksgiving I jotted down a few things I am thankful for:

Today is Thanksgiving, the day we think about what we are thankful for. I am thankful for my family, my loving husband and our beautiful girls. My caring mom and sisters and large and loving extended family. I am thankful for:

  • Wonderful friends near and far
  • Incredible old friends who are my rock
  • Fantastic new friends I have met
  • Fabulous opportunities
  • HomeWorkshop.com
  • Talented and generous Contributors
  • Creative and fun site visitors

This Thanksgiving I am also thankful for:

  • Nature in all her beauty
  • Mountain air
  • A dusting of snow
  • Good food
  • Good coffee
  • Good energy
  • Pie

I fed this bit of text into Wordle and created my word cloud art (top). You can customize the font, layout and colors. Give it a try! It’s fun and addictive. Thanks to Jonathan Feinberg, a Senior Software Engineer at IBM Research, who created Wordle.

Here’s my daughter’s Thanksgiving Wordle:

How fabulous a word cloud of your favorite story, poem or speech would be. The lyrics of a song that is meaningful to you. Or words special to a couple for a Wedding artwork. Oodles of possibilities!

You can print your image with Wordle, use your computer’s “print screen” feature or use a screen capture software to save your image (that’s what I did).

A tip: If you save your image in Wordle’s public Gallery, click on it quickly and copy the URL (Web page address in your browser) and save that URL somewhere to allow you to get back to that art again.

Another tip: Be sure to spell check your text first (see if you can spot the typo in my Wordle!)
